Symptoms
MetaFrame XP server zone data collector resolves to farm servers that are no longer on line. The ICA connection gets directed by the DC to a Metaframe server that is unable to accept the connection.
Cause
Each zone data collector has a connection open to all other data collectors in the farm. This connection is used to immediately relay any changes reported by member servers within its own zone to the data collectors of all other zones. Zone member servers actively update the zone data collectors as users log on to them and as their load levels change. If the data collector receives no communication from a member server in its own zone within the configured time interval, the zone data collector pings (IMA ping) that member server to verify if it is still online. The default interval for this active checking is 60 seconds.
Resolution
The default interval can be decreased by modifying the following registry key on the zone data collectors.
WARNING! This requires you to edit the registry. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Citrix cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECitrixIMARuntimeKeepAliveInterval
Default value: 60000 milliseconds REG_DWORD: 0xEA60
You may want to decrease this setting if your environment is experiencing servers that are going offline unexpectedly and/or if there are network interface card issues or severe network reliability issues in your environment. By setting this value lower, you can prevent users from being sent to the “problem” server (if that server is also shown as the least loaded server in the farm) during the one minute default interval.
Lowering this value increases network traffic between the zone data collectors and the member servers in their zones.
