Citrix cannot guarantee nor provide absolute rules regarding compliance with Microsoft licensing. We can however provide the following guidelines:
The document Microsoft SQL Server: How to Buy (http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/default.asp), dated May 28, 2003, defines the following three licensing options:
Processor license. Requires a single license for each CPU in the computer running SQL Server. This license includes unlimited client device access.
Server plus device client access license (CAL). Requires a license for the computer running the Microsoft server product, as well as CALs for each client device.
Server plus user client access license (CAL). Requires a license for the computer running the Microsoft server product, as well as CALs for each user.
When using Citrix MetaFrame Secure Access Manager with SQL Server, there are 2 possible scenarios:
1. Only the Access Management Console (AMC) accesses the SQL Server. (No Content Delivery Agents (CDAs) that store data in a SQL database are used.) In this instance, any of the above three licensing models can be used. A processor license will allow any number of administrators to use the AMC from any number of devices. The server plus device CAL option would require a license for each computer that the AMC is used on. The third option, server plus user CAL, calls for a license for each user that runs the AMC, independent of device(s) used.
2. The AMC and one or more CDAs utilize SQL Server. In this case, a processor license is recommended, as Secure Access Manager is acting as middleware. Each user that logs into an access center with these CDAs indirectly uses the SQL database. If a definite number of users and/or devices can be determined, the server and CAL options may be feasible as well.
Citrix Content Delivery Agents that may utilize SQL Server:
§ Alert Broadcaster
§ Alert Broadcaster Manager
§ Database Viewer
§ Interactive Poll
§ Message Center
§ Personnel Locator
Secure Access Manager access centers that do not include the above CDAs will not consume SQL Server licenses during usage; only the AMC connects to the SQL server – please refer to scenario 1 above.
