Issue

When upgrading MetaFrame XP from Feature Release 2 to Feature Release 3, the following error message appears:

“Installation ended prematurely because of an error.”

This message happens after being prompted to create a backup even when clicking OK.

In the Event Viewer a message is generated:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11708
Description: Product: — Installation operation failed.

Cause

Originally unknown. Searching Microsoft TechNet showed 329456 and the following excerpt:

On Windows 2000, after you run the exported Microsoft Windows Installer (.msi) file, errors are logged in the Application Event Log. No error message is displayed to indicate that the installation failed.

Citrix support had the customer execute the filemon utility.

Resolution

Check the permissions on the installation folder. Add the Everyone group with Read, Read and Execute, and List Folder Contents permissions.
