In some cases, you may import a network print server for the ICA session, but you cannot control whether the user connects to this printer locally outside the session. In this scenario, results can vary.

User connects locally and is not assigned:

If you did NOT assign the user to the printer in the Citrix Management Console, the user will still get the printer created as “Printername on Servername.” The user cannot save a change to the properties for the next ICA logon. Checking Update Printer Properties at each logon under Network Printers does not have any effect. Each time the user logs on, it takes the property on the print server of the locally connected printer. Only the assigned printers in the Citrix Management Console are listed under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers \Citrix\NetworkPrinters\PrinterList. All network printers will have a key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections but only those assigned will have a value called devmode.

User does not connect locally and is assigned:

If you HAVE assigned the user to the printer by the Citrix Management Console, it can save the users’ changes to the printer property within the session and the change can be there for their next logon.

Users will have the following in their profile:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Citrix\Network Printers\PrintersList
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections\servername,printername
Value = Devmode

If Update Printer Properties at each login under Network Printers is not checked and the user makes a change to the autoconnected printer within the session, the change is saved to a new key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Devmodes2

This key does not exist until the user makes a change and is allowed to save it.

If you want to override the user changes, you must make the Printing Preference change in the console for the printer and have Update Printer Properties at each logon checked under Network Printers. The changes made under Printing Preference are not actually made to the printer on the print server. They are read and incorporated at logon.

The administrator can control only four properties. They are paper size, copy count, print quality, and orientation. Some printers may not have options for these properties and, therefore, the properties would not be applied.

Note: If the printer has not been connected to locally and is not assigned, the printer will not be autoconnected for the session.
