How to disable the Windows explorer functions in a published Internet Explorer

Description:

----------------

Internet explorer published in explorer mode (iexplore.exe –e) is used to provide users the Windows explorer functionality in a seamless session.

Problem:

------------

If a user right-clicks a resource or file in the left pane and chooses one of the Explorer functions (e.g. open, search), the ICA seamless host Agent reports an error and the full server desktop appears.

When using the build-in internet explorer search function this error does not occour.

Background:

----------------

As the Windows explorer is not suitable for multi user environments it is best practice to use the Internet explorer in explorer mode instead.

The method of copying and renaming the explorer.exe to, for example, explorer2.exe is a widely used but not suggested or supported method by the Citrix Development Team.

When doing this, there may be other side effects effects like session hangs or sessions getting slow when launching several instances of the renamed explorer2.exe. These issues are the result of internal explorer.exe dependencies that cannot be resolved without rewriting large parts of the kernel OS.

Iexplore.exe is a supported and recommended command that can be used to provide the functionality.

However, with default server and domain settings, it incorporates functions which call the explorer-shell. When using them, this may lead to

- end of seamless mode for the session

- display of the full desktop

- the following error

-

Solution:

-----------

To solve the problem implement a Group Policy Object for the Metaframe XP users which will disable the Explorer options.

- In the Group Policy Objecty Editor navigate to User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer

- Enable the Policy “Remove Windows Explorer’s default context menu”

The Windows Explorer options won’t appear anymore when a user right clicks a resource.
