Products: Resource Manager for MetaFrame XPe

This document describes and explains this issue.

Issue

When a server goes down, Resource Manager, if configured, sends an email alert. There is no GUI to configure this particular automated alert. Users attempting to test this functionality often report that manually shutting down, rebooting the server, or stopping the IMA Service does not producing the desired alert.

Reasoning

The following text is from Page 40 of the Administrator’s Guide: Citrix Resource Manager for Citrix MetaFrame XPe 1.0, Feature Release 2/Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows:

“The alerts work in different ways, depending on the version of Resource Manager that is installed on the server:

For servers that are running Resource Manager for MetaFrame XPe Version 1.0, Feature Release 1/Service Pack 1 and later, alerts are sent any time the IMA Service is not stopped properly.

For servers that are running Resource Manager for MetaFrame XPe Version 1.0, alerts are sent any time the IMA Service stops operating, including expected events such as scheduled reboots.”

Resolution

To properly test this functionality on a Feature Release 1 or Feature Release 2 MetaFrame XPe server, you must stop the IMA Service “improperly,” such as a crash or a hanging service.

One test that works is to follow the directions in Q244139: Windows Feature Allows a Memory.dmp File to Be Generated with Keyboard. This enables a manually generated server crash. When the server “crashes,” IMA is stopped improperly and generates an alert.
