The basic architecture and the responsibilities of each component of Installation Management Services are essential to know during the planning and implementation process. Here are key points to remember about each IMS component.
Citrix Packager-
Clean base version of the operating system . This should only have the Citrix Packager installed.
When installing the packager application, only install it on the packager operating system .
This OPERATING SYSTEM should match the target machines. TSE for MetaFrame and WinFrame for WinFrame.
Packager runs on TSE or WinFrame.
Note the emphasis on TSE; MetaFrame is NOT installed on the Packager OPERATING SYSTEM .
When booted into the Packager OPERATING SYSTEM the Packager.exe is used to package the application(s).

Citrix Installer-
The Installer is the ONLY licensed component.
Can be installed on MetaFrame or WinFrame.
Requires approximately 30 MB of free disk space.
Backup Packager Operating system -
Can be NT Workstation.
Can be NT Server (any flavor).
Can be NT 3.51.
Does not have Packager.exe installed, but does run packager.exe from Packager OPERATING SYSTEM installation.
File Server-
Must support UNC share points.
Must have enough free disk space to hold the packages and scripts.
User creating packages must have write access to this share.
Installer Service account must have read access to this share.
