MetaFrame XP Feature Release 2 is installed by using an .msi file called Mfxp001.msi. This file initiates the Windows Installer Service (msiexec), which installs the software. The default behavior of this file is to install the full MetaFrame server product with the Feature Release 2 update. This default installation can be changed using transform files, editing the .msi file, or using parameters with msiexec. Below are two issues that can occur when using Citrix Installation Manager.

Issue 1: Uninstalling the Mfxp001.msi Package Using Installation Manager Removes MetaFrame from the Server

When you use Citrix Installation Manager to push out Feature Release 2 to an existing MetaFrame XP or Feature Release 1 server and then uninstall the .msi package, the process completely removes MetaFrame.

NOTE: The files from Feature Release 1 are backed up to a Program FilesCitrixUpgradeBackup directory, but the process of uninstalling Feature Release 2 files and replacing them with Feature Release 1 files does not occur. The Feature Release 2 files are removed but not replaced.

In some cases, after uninstalling the Feature Release 2 .msi file, the event log shows:

Event ID 11922
Source: MsiInstaller
"Error 1922. The IMA Service could not be deleted.
Verify that you have sufficient privileges to remove system services."

This means that the uninstall process using Installation Manager could not remove the IMA Service. At this point, you may not be able to reinstall MetaFrame with or without Feature Release 2.

When you reinstall MetaFrame, the IMA Service may not start and the installation will stop without completing. However, the second installation attempt works because the first failed attempt properly removes the IMA Service. Installation proceeds but the local host cache (LHC) may need to be rebuilt for the IMA Service to start.

See the Citrix MetaFrame XP Administrators Guide for information about using msiexec with CTX_MF_FORCE_SUBSYSTEM_UNINSTALL=Yes.

If the uninstallation using Installation Manager completely removes MetaFrame from the server, you can reinstall MetaFrame XP, Feature Release 2 using the Windows Installer Service or Add/Remove Programs.

NOTE: You may want to edit the .msi file to change the default install behavior. See [Document Not Found] "Creating Custom Transform Files for the Deployment of Feature Release 2" for details about how to modify the .msi using Orca or transform files.

The only way to downgrade an Feature Release 2 installation to the previous version of MetaFrame is to manually delete it using Add/Remove. Follow these steps:

1. From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel.

2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

3. Select the Feature Release 2 entry.

4. Click Change. You are presented with a panel asking you if you want to Modify, Repair, or Remove Feature Release 2.

5. Select Remove and click Enter. The next dialog box gives you an option to Downgrade or Remove.

6. Choose Downgrade to revert to the previous MetaFrame version.

Issue 2: Manual Downgrade from Feature Release 2 Causes the Reinstallation of the Feature Release 2 .msi Package Using Installation Manager to Fail (but it actually installs)

If you need to return to Feature Release 1 and have not already attempted to use Citrix Installation Manager to do so, you can manually downgrade to Feature Release 1 using Control Panel > Change > Remove > Downgrade. If you then push Mfxp001.msi out to the server using Citrix Installation Manager, this will appear to fail.

The following error message appears in the Citrix Management Console:

Fatal error during installation.
MsiConfigureProduct({1E43A449-2D4E-48EA-A840-66111C015123},
INSTALLLEVEL_MAXIMUM, INSTALLSTATE_LOCAL)

The event log will have:

Event ID 11714
Source: MsiInstaller
Product: Citrix MetaFrame XP for Windows, Feature Release 2 -- Error 1714. The older version of Citrix MetaFrame XP for Windows, Feature Release 2 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. System Error 1612.

Event ID 3601
Source: Installation Manager
Error: Fatal error during installation.
Details: MsiConfigureProduct({1E43A449-2D4E-48EA-A840-66111C015123},
INSTALLLEVEL_MAXIMUM, INSTALLSTATE_LOCAL

The Citrix Management Console reports that the installed .msi package failed, but the process actually succeeded. Investigation indicates the error may be due to installing Feature Release 2.

• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCitrix has "Service Pack 2" listed under ICAProductMinorVersion.

• The MetaFrame files are dated 4/18/02 and 4/19/02.

• The server properties show Feature Release 2.

In some cases, the Citrix Management Console may be reporting incorrect information from the LHC. Rebuild the LHC and verify that the Feature Release 2 update completed. You must restart the server for the upgrade to take effect.

Force Reboot After Install

When you check this box, the server automatically restarts after installing the package; however, this action may only log you off. This occurs only on servers where a user is logged on at the console of the MetaFrame server during the installation process. You must manually restart the server for the update/changes to take effect.Verify if restart occurred in the event log. If the server did not restart, shut down and try again.
