Products: Citrix MetaFrame 1.8 for Microsoft NT 4.0 Server Terminal Server Edition
The Citrix ICA 32-bit (Windows 95 and Windows NT ICA Client) Client supports multiple language keyboard layouts and types.
The following steps occur during the logon process of a Citrix ICA Client to a TSE/MetaFrame server: (The default settings of the Citrix ICA Client were used.) (US keycodes were used in the below examples.)
1. The Citrix 32-bit ICA Client queries the local OS for its default keyboard settings.
A. On Windows 95 the client queries this value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard\preload\1\(Default) "00010409"
There can be multiple keys under the preload key but the Citrix client queries only the "1"
key because it is always set as the default for the Windows 95 user.
B. On Windows NT (Server and Workstation), the client queries this value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload\1:REG_SZ:00020409
There can be multiple values under the preload key but the Citrix client queries only the
first value because it is always set as the default for the Windows NT user.
2. When a connection is started to a Terminal Server/MetaFrame server the following occurs:
A. The client passes the keyboard language keycodes to the TSE/MF server before any
logon attempt is allowed.
B. The TSE/MF server receives the keyboard information from the Citrix ICA Client
(example: Win95 passes 00010409 for US settings) and queries the following registry
settings:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts\ 00020409
Layout File : REG_SZ: KBDUS.DLL
Layout Text : REG_SZ: US
Under the Keyboard Layouts key are all the installed keyboard layouts available for that
server. The corresponding keyboard layout is automatically loaded for the logon
attempt. Once the user successfully logs onto the server, the keyboard layout is loaded
into that users profile.
If a keyboard layout is not installed on the TSE/MF server, the servers default layout is used and it may be incompatible with the local Windows NT Workstation or Win95 workstation settings. Additional keyboard layouts can be installed on the server as well as the client machines to resolve this problem.
When adding more layouts to your client machines, it is important to make sure that these layouts are available on your TSE/MF server. Additionally, it is important to make sure that the hexadecimal keycodes map to the same language settings for both Windows NT and Win95 (for example, the keycode 00000409 is the code for US in both the Win95 and the Windows NT registries).
The keyboard layouts can also be set manually from the Citrix Remote Application Manager and the Citrix Program Neighborhood Client.
