Summary
Any application published on Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition that has Virtual IP enabled will consume a Virtual IP address regardless of whether it is listed in the “Monitor the following processes list” or not.
Background
This article was written to clarify one major aspect of enabling Virtual IP on a Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 server – that Virtual IP is enabled for ALL published applications on a server with Virtual IP enabled.
Mistaken Assumption About Virtual IP
When a process is listed in the “Monitor the following processes list” in the farm properties, that application uses a Virtual IP each and every time it is launched. If a process is NOT specified in that list, it does not receive a Virtual IP address.
Corrected Reality About Virtual IP
If you enable Virtual IP on a Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 server (and define an IP address range), ALL sessions that are started on the server consume an IP from the pool of available IP addresses regardless of whether the processes that are started in the session require them or not. The IP address is reserved for use within this session by processes that are listed in the “Monitor the following processes list.” Processes that are not on the list do not utilize this reserved IP address for network communication.
So for example, if you have a telephony (or “CTI”) application that requires a Virtual IP address and then you decided to publish Notepad and Adobe Acrobat Reader, these applications also draw a Virtual IP from the defined pool of IP addresses even if they are not specified in the “Monitor the following processes list” in the farm properties.
If you only have a small range of IP addresses and need them all dedicated to the CTI application, you should not publish other applications on that server. Applications that require Virtual IP should be “siloed” on dedicated servers where users cannot inadvertently draw from the IP address pool.
