CTX103256 - Error: MetaFrame Password Manager cannot access the shared folder that contains credential information

Products: Citrix MetaFrame Password Manager 2.0, Citrix MetaFrame Password Manager 2.5

Symptom

The following error message appears when starting the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent:

“MetaFrame Password Manager cannot access the shared folder that contains credential information. Contact your network administrator for assistance.”

The following error message appears when you click OK to acknowledge the previous error message:

“MetaFrame Password Manager was unable to synchronize your credential data with the central store. Until the data can be synchronized, single sign-on functionality may be disabled for some of your applications.”

Cause

The MetaFrame Password Manager Agent was configured to access a shared folder that contains credential information. This shared folder is inaccessible. Possible reasons for the inaccessibility of the shared folder are:

• The path to the configured shared folder does not exist. This might be a result of the share being deleted.

• The path to the shared folder in one of the following locations is wrong:

1 - HKCU\Software\Citrix\MetaFrame Password Manager\Extensions\SyncManager

2 - User MMF file

3 - HKLM\Software\Citrix\MetaFrame Password Manager\Extensions\SyncManager

When the agent starts, it first checks for the path to the shared folder in HKCU (1). If this path cannot be found in HKCU, it will check the user MMF file (2). If the MMF file does not contain the path, it will check in HKLM (3).

If none of these locations contain the correct path, the error messages will appear.

If HKCU does not contain the path but HKLM contains the correct path and you still get the error, this means that the MMF file contains an incorrect path.

• The computer on which the share is located is down.

Reproduction

Do the following to reproduce the issue:

1. Ensure that the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent is not running.

2. Configure the MetaFrame Passsword Manager Agent to point to a shared folder that contains credential information. You can make this configuration from the MetaFrame Password Console and export it to the Agent.

3. Delete the shared folder that the agent was configured to access (see the previous step).

4. Start the Password Manager Agent.

Resolution

Following are some steps that can be used to resolve the issue:

1. Ensure that the path to which the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent is pointing is accessible. This path is located in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Citrix\MetaFrame Password Manager\Extensions \SyncManager\Syncs\\Servers

The server1 value located in this key references the shared folder that contains the credential information.
Please note that should be replaced with the actual name that was given to the synchronizer.

2. Use the MetaFrame Password Manager Console to configure the correct path to the share that contains the credential information.

Note: Use the following steps to configure the server setting that is used by the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent to locate the credential store. All previously configured settings for the agent might be lost when you double-click the .REG file on the machine where the Password Manager Agent is installed.

A. Open the MetaFrame Password Manager Console.

B. Create a new Agent Setting.

C. Add a file system synchronizer to the newly created Agent Setting.

D. Ensure that the Server setting in the file system synchronizer is configured with the UNC path to the file share that contains the credential information.

E. Export the Agent Setting using the .REG file format.

F. On the computer where the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent is installed, double-click the .REG file to add the Agent Setting created by the MetaFrame Password Manager Console to the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent.

3. Use the MetaFrame Password Manager Console to remove the inaccessible path that the agent is configured to access.

Note: The following steps will disable the Server setting in the MetaFrame Password Manager Console. The Agent will no longer try to look for the credential store in the inaccessible location. All previously configured settings for the agent might be lost when you double-click the .REG file on the machine where the Password Manager Agent is installed.

A. Open the MetaFrame Password Manager Console.

B. Create a new Agent Setting.

C. Export the newly created agent setting using the .REG file format.

D. On the computer where the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent is installed, double-click the .REG file to add the Agent Setting created by the MetaFrame Password Manager Console to the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent.

4. Remove the MetaFrame Password Manager Agent and install the non-customized version of the agent from the MetaFrame Password Manager CD. By so doing, the agent returns to its default settings. The agent will no longer try to access the inaccessible path that it was previously configured to access.

5. Remove the MMF file from the user profile. A new one will be created automatically at agent start up.
