Symptoms
The following error message is received:
“Your authentication was not successful. Citrix Password Manager cannot switch to a different authentication mechanism than the one used previously. Contact your administrator for assistance.”
Cause
When you switch authentication methods, such as logging on with a fingerprint scanner and then with a password, Password Manager is required to recovery your encryption keys via the selection in your user configuration. Password Manager supports the following methods:
• Previous Password
• Previous Password or Security Questions
• Automatic Key Recovery
These options can be set in each user configuration under the “Key Management” section.
The error message you are receiving is generally seen when using your smart cards with “smart card data protect” as the source for key and “previous password” as the key recovery option. In this case when the user moves from a smartcard based logon to a password based logon because the smart card is no longer available, Password Manager generates this error message. This error is informing the user to reauthenticate with the previous authentication mechanism, such as a smart card in the above example.
Resolution
If you are encountering this issue, solutions include:
1. Automatic Key recovery as your key recovery method. AKR will allow users to seamlessly switch between authentication methods without being prompted for identification.
2. Previous Password/Security Questions as your key recovery method. This will allow users to answer preconfigured security questions to recover their keys.
3. Force users to only use 1 authentication method, a strong authenticator or a domain password.
Note: Both 1 and 2 require the Password Manager service to be installed.
More Information
Refer to chapter 9 of the Password Manager 4.1 Administrator’s Guide for additional information on the key recovery options and the authentication process.
