Symptoms
When installing Presentation Server 3.0 or 4.0, the Access Suite Console, or a Hotfix Rollup Pack that modifies the Access Suite Console, the installation may fail with the following error message:
“Error 1920.Service ‘Diagnostic Facility COM Server’ (CdfSvc) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.”
The Event Viewer System Log shows:
Event ID 7000
“The diagnostic facility Com server service failed to start. Access denied 1920”
The Event Viewer Application Log shows:
Event ID 11708
Product: MetaFrame Presentation Server - Administration Snap-in -- Installation operation failed.
And
Event ID 11920
”Error 1920.Service ‘Diagnostic Facility COM Server’ (CdfSvc) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services
Cause
The %commonprogramfiles% path in the registry, HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ is pointing to (in this case) “H:\ProgramFiles\Common” which is not a valid path.
Resolution
1. Change:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CommonFilesDir
To:
C:\Program Files\Common Files (or a valid path for the system)
2. Reboot the server.
3. Restart the software installation.
