Web Proxy Issues When Accessing SharePoint Through Advanced Access Control

Products: Advanced Access Control 4.2

Symptoms

When accessing Microsoft SharePoint through Advanced Access Control, the following issues are seen.

These behaviors may be attributed to the Web proxy URL rewriting feature of Advanced Access Control. Whenever a resource is accessed by Advanced Access Control it passes through the Advanced Access Control URL rewriting phase. These issues are especially prominent in a product such as Microsoft SharePoint.

Note: Accessing the SharePoint server directly does not produce these issues.

• The style sheets on the SharePoint site are not rendered correctly.. For example, on a native SharePoint site each Web Part shows Border="0" in the HTML, but when rendered through Advanced Access Control the HTML shows Border="1".

Workaround: Setting the Web Part to have a frame style of "None" displays no border when using Advanced Access Control.

• There is no drop-down menu in the Document Library Web Part.

In this case, Advanced Access Control removes the standard SharePoint drop-down menu and doesn't replace it with a customized one.

• When clicking on a document in the Document Web Part, the correct options appear (Launch, LiveEdit, and so on), but they appear in the main browser window instead of in a drop down menu which is not as nice as the Web Interface for SharePoint option.

• SharePoint ActiveX does not work. This reduces some functionality as shown in the following graphic:

By design, the context menu functionality for SharePoint and anything related to the WSS OpenDocuments ActiveX control is disabled. This control handles items such as “Edit in Microsoft Office Word.” This control is also used for Check In/Check Out.

• When attempting to access a .pdf file, a “File not found” error message is received. If Excel is opened before opening the .pdf file, the .pdf file opens successfully.

• Embedding multiple Web Interface sites into SharePoint returns a message stating that the browser is in an inconsistent state. This was originally reported as a SharePoint and Advanced Access Control issue, but after investigation it appears that this occurs with a static HTML page containing iframes.

• Shortcuts created from a SharePoint document fail. For example, if you save a document from SharePoint and try to access the document from a shortcut link on the desktop, it fails because the URL has been modified by Web proxy URL rewriting.

Resolution

For applications that are affected when accessed through Web proxy, the following actions are suggested:

• Deploy the Secure Access Client when users connect to Access Gateway with Advanced Access Control. This allows users to connect directly with the SharePoint site and not use Web proxy.

• Disable Web proxy URL rewriting for that particular SharePoint resource based on a policy (if possible) by installing hotfix AAC420W001.

Hotfix AAC420W001 - For Access Gateway - Advanced Access Control 4.2 for Windows Server 2000 & 2003

• Use a published Internet Explorer browser from a Presentation Server farm to access internal resources such as your SharePoint site.
