Symptoms

A policy to deny users audio capabilities does not block them from hearing audio.

Windows Media Player plays sound, even though "Turn off speakers" through policies is enabled and "Disable Client Audio Mapping" in the Citrix Connection Configuration is enabled.

Cause

This is due to multimedia streaming, also called “Rave” technology, available in MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 and Citrix Presentation Server 4.0. This allows multimedia content to be streamed from a Citrix Presentation Server through an ICA session to an ICA client.

If the policy to "turn off speakers" is enabled, sound traffic can be prevented for specific users, but if Speed Screen Multimedia Acceleration is enabled, clients can still generate "sound" traffic, as the policy to disable audio only applies to the Citrix audio virtual channel, not Rave.

If a client uses ICA 8.0 or later and MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 or later and an application using DirectShow (for example, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player) the client can hear sound despite of the settings.

Resolution

In addition to the policies to disable audio, disable Speed Screen Multimedia Acceleration in the Presentation Server Console farm-wide settings or disable sound on the application level.

Note: In a custom ICA connection to the application, sound is disabled by default on the client side.
