Summary
This article demonstrates the use of Question-based authentication without the need for the Password Manager Service, as in previous versions of Password Manager.
While this approach is supported, it is not recommended and primarily exists for purposes of backward compatibility.
Requirements
The service may or may not be installed and configured. The service may be used for other purposes such as Data Integrity or Account Self-Service, but will not be used for key recovery using IVQ (Question-based authentication without the service).
Background
With the consolidation of Question-based key recovery and Account Self-Service under a common set of service-dependent Security Questions, use of Identity Verification Questions (IVQ) became obsolete.
However for interoperability with previous versions, a single security question can be made backward compatible effectively making it an IVQ question.
Procedure
Managing the Question
1. Create a single question that will serve as the IVQ question. The question must have Case-sensitivity on.
2. Create a Question group and place the question in it. Set the Group answer count to 1.
3. Add the Question Group to the questionnaire.
4. Under Manage Questions > Key recovery:
a. Select the IVQ group for key recovery.
b. Ensure that no other question or question group is selected for key recovery.
Managing the User configuration
1. Once the questionnaire is backward compatible, update the user configuration to use IVQ as its Key recovery method:
o Under Key Management, select the IVQ check box under the “Prompt user to select the method : Previous password or Security Questions” option.
2. The user should now be able to use IVQ.
More Information
Note that any other questions used in the questionnaire will serve the sole purpose of Account Self-Service, this feature is enabled for the user.
