Symptoms

When creating a desktop group in the Access Management Console, the virtual desktops appear as “Not registered”. Other symptoms for this issue include:

• The Application event log (Event ID 1208) on the virtual desktop contains messages of the form “Ping request was rejected by the Citrix Desktop Delivery Controller Service. It may be unable to contact this machine. Check that there is not a firewall blocking connection”.

• The Application event log (Event ID 1123) on the Desktop Delivery Controller contains messages of the form “Failed to apply settings on the Virtual Desktop Agent on machine <SID – Reference Number>. Reason: The caller was not authenticated by the service”.

Cause

This is typically caused by the virtual desktop computer not allowing the logon right "Access this computer from the network" to the Desktop Delivery Controller computer. The logon right has not been granted to the DDC from the Group Policy, Active Directory, or locally on the virtual desktop computer.

Resolution

Grant the logon right "Access this computer from the network" to the Controllers security group.

The Controllers security group is created when the first Desktop Delivery Controller is installed and is contained within the Active Directory Organizational Unit created for the XenDesktop farm. The members of the Controller’s security group are the computer accounts for the Desktop Delivery Controllers in the Xen Desktop farm.

The easiest method of granting this right is to apply a group policy from the domain controller either to the domain as a whole or to an Organizational Unit containing the Virtual Desktops for the XenDesktop farm. If this is not possible, then the right can be granted through a Local Policy on the virtual desktops. It may be necessary to restart the virtual desktops after setting this policy to force the policy to update and register with the Desktop Delivery Controller.
