Summary
This article summarizes the limitations of using Web Interface 4.x with XenDesktop 2.0.
Background
XenDesktop 2.0 includes Web Interface 5.0 and this is the only version of the Web Interface that is officially supported for use with XenDesktop. Although it is possible to use Web Interface 4.x with XenDesktop, there are a number of limitations. This article lists the limitations and, where appropriate, provides suggested workarounds.
See Knowledge Center article CTX117837 – Web Interface 5.0 Support on Presentation Server for more information.
Limitations
● Desktop appliance support. There is no dedicated site type for desktop appliance users in Web Interface 4.x. Users of desktop appliances must use their Web browsers to log on to an access platform site and launch virtual desktops manually.
● Managed endpoint device support. Web Interface 4.x does not provide support for the extended waiting periods that can occur when accessing a virtual desktop provided by a managed endpoint device that is powered off or suspended. When users of both access platform sites and Program Neighborhood Agent Services sites attempt to access such a desktop, they may encounter a generic error message. In response to the launch request, Desktop Delivery Controller powers on or resumes the endpoint device. If users wait for the managed endpoint device to become available (although they have no way of knowing when it is ready) and then try to connect again, they may be able to access their virtual desktop.
● Citrix Desktop Toolbar support. By default, virtual desktops accessed through Web Interface 4.x do not use the Citrix Desktop Toolbar. To add support for the Desktop Toolbar follow the steps below:
1. Using a text editor, open the default.ica file in the \conf directory for the site, which is typically located at C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Citrix\SiteName\conf.
2. In the Application section, add the following line:
ConnectionBar=1
3. Repeat the same procedure for the following ICA settings files in this directory:
bandwidth_high.ica
bandwidth_medium_high.ica
bandwidth_medium.ica
bandwidth_low.ica
● Automatic desktop launch. Unlike Web Interface 5.0, Version 4.x does not automatically access a virtual desktop when a user logs on if it is the only published resource available to that user. A workaround for Web Interface 4.x is to enable the use of browser bookmarks. Users can then create bookmarks to their virtual desktops in their Web browsers and access the desktops automatically using the bookmarks.
● Application/desktop separation. Web Interface 4.x lacks the tabbed Applications screen and multiple view styles available in Version 5.0 that help users distinguish between published applications and virtual desktops. A suggested workaround for Version 4.x is to publish applications and desktops in separate folders.
● XenDesktop error conditions. Occasionally, XenDesktop may return error conditions that are not recognized by Web Interface 4.x and, as a result, the errors appear to users and/or administrators as generic errors. If this happens, consult the event logs on the server running Desktop Delivery Controller for more details about the error.
