Summary
This article describes how to update Network Interface Card (NIC) drivers on Citrix Provisioning Server / Ardence systems.
Background
During the installation of the Provisioning Server and client software, the Provisioning Server drivers and services bind to enabled network adapters. For this reason, it is highly recommended that any NIC driver updates be performed prior to installing Provisioning Server software. If a NIC driver must be updated after the Provisioning Server software has been installed, follow the procedures outlined below.
Procedure
To update the driver of a network adapter installed on a Provisioning Server:
1. Open the Services Control Panel on the Provisioning Server and stop and disable the following services:
For Ardence 3.x:
• 3Com Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) service
• Ardence Login service
• Ardence IO service
• Ardence TFTP service
• Ardence Watchdog service
For Ardence 4.x:
• Ardence Streaming service
• Ardence TFTP service
For Provisioning Server 4.x:
• PVS Streaming service
• PVS TFTP service
For Provisioning Server 5.x:
• Citrix PVS Stream service
• Citrix PVS TFTP service
2. Right-click My Computer and select Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.
3. Open the Network Adapters list, right-click the Network adapter and select Properties > Driver.
4. Click Update driver and follow the instructions to update the driver.
5. Once the driver has been updated, restart the server.
6. Run the Provisioning Server Configuration Wizard to reconfigure, restart, and bind the Provisioning services to the network adapter.
7. Open the Services Control Panel and confirm that the 3Com PXE service and all the Provisioning services have started.
Note: If another DHCP Server is being used to provide clients with their IP addresses and DHCP options 66 and 67, stop and disable the 3Com PXE service.
To update the driver of a network adapter installed on a Provisioning Server target device:
1. Turn on the client and enter the BIOS setup.
2. Configure the client to boot off its hard drive and restart the client.
3. Uninstall the Provisioning Server Client software using Add/Remove Programs.
4. Restart the client system.
5. Right-click My Computer and select Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.
6. Open the Network Adapters list, right-click the Network adapter and select Properties > Driver.
7. Click Update driver and follow the instructions to update the driver.
8. Once the driver has been updated, reboot the client system and install the Provisioning Server Client software.
9. Restart the client system and enter the BIOS setup.
10. Configure the client to boot off the network through PXE and boot the client.
11. Once the client boots, verify that the client has an active connection to its assigned vDisk by checking the status of the vDisk connection in the Provisioning Server Statistics icon in the Notification Area in the lower right corner of the screen.
12. Launch Image Builder to build a new image.
13. Once the new image has been built, open the Provisioning Server Administrator on the Provisioning Server and configure the client to boot off its assigned vDisk.
14. Restart the client.
Note: This procedure also applies for XenTools and VMware Tools on a Provisioning Server target device
