In the computer industry, the right metaphor counts. Consider the term client-server computing: It's simple, appropriate, easily understandable. Not so Web services, which has suffered a good deal of confusion, in part because of its unwieldy designator. While Web services is likely to overcome that, the list of failed metaphors is long: artificial intelligence, expert systems, and neural networks, to name a few. "

  Dot Product -- from MathWorld
Dot Product -- from MathWorld

In an effort to really confuse people. I am broadening what I put in this blog to include some side topics. Why dot products?
This is a representation of how two or more entities can relate to each other and how they diverge esp. at a moment in time. The dot product of perpendicular lines is 0. Neither supports or enforces the other. But viewed from a supplimentary dimention. They could be greatly enforcing. I will probably come back to this. I wonder if this analysis could be the basis of an analysis of complimentary diciplines of study. Math and physics, finance and accounting, systems and programing.

ONLamp.com: Caching PHP Programs with PEAR [Oct. 11, 2001]
ONLamp.com: Caching PHP Programs with PEAR [Oct. 11, 2001]: "Caching is currently a hot topic in the PHP world. Because PHP produces dynamic web pages, scripts must be run and results must be calculated each time a web page is requested, regardless if the results are the same each time. In addition, PHP compiles the script every time it is requested. This overhead can seriously slow down a site with heavy traffic. Fortunately, the results of a web request can be stored, or cached, and presented to matching requests without having to re-run or recompile the scripts. Commercial products like ZendCache or open-source solutions such as Alternate PHP Cache provide a means to cache the compiled version of a PHP script -- the byte-code."

eModerators.com - The role of the online instructor/facilitator: "A prerequisite to the use of computer mediated communication (CMC) when facilitating online instruction is access to a high level of computing power and a reliable telecommunication infrastructure. After saying that, I want to emphasize in the strongest way that when developing and delivering instruction, whether online or not, the use of technology is secondary to well-designed learning goals and objectives. What distinguishes online instruction from entertainment or recreation is the purposefulness of the designers and developers in provoking certain intelligent responses to the learning materials, context, and environment. At Home and About :: How time passes when you're having fun: "This document was written as a record of how I set up multiple sites and subdomains on one installation of PostNuke and a single mySQL database for the requirements at the time. It details how I did it, problems encountered along the way, and solutions that were put in place.
I do not know if this is the 'right' way to set up PostNuke multisites for the given situation. I have explained some areas with some liberty in terms of technical accuracy. The document probably doesn't answer everyone's questions, but this way worked for me. Some parts of it may be useful for some people. It is also a draft which means I haven't gone back and tidied up things like rambling sections etc. I'll get around to it soon enough I suppose. :-) "
