Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Issues
Well, well, well, what do you know? There are issues with Windows Server 2003 SP1. As Vizzini said in “The Princess Bride”… “Inconceivable!”
As he also said in the same movie:
“You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The first is never get involved in a land war in Asia. The second, only slightly less well known, is this: never install a service pack when a server is supposed to be on line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha –“
Or was it “never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha –“, I can’t remember.
Regardless, let’s take a look at what is going on with the wonderful world of SP1.
Windows Server 2003 SP1 (Service Pack 1) Issues/ Problems:
1. Microsoft Windows Server officials said they expected 80 percent of "major server applications" to work out of the box. (and there was much rejoicing)
a. Since 4 out of 5 applications will work on SP1 some are speculating that those applications will be on the systems of the same 4 out of 5 Dentist's that reccomend Flouride toothpaste. So the 1 out of 5 applications that don't work will be on systems of people who won't care because that have too many other problems to "cut their teeth on".
2. If you have Dell Servers you must upgrade your OpenManage software to version 4.4 before installing SP1. Dell plans to release version 4.4 in late May 2005 with support for SP1.
3. Microsoft® Windows Server™ 2003 experiences a STOP 0x00000051 (REGISTRY_ERROR) after applying Service Pack 1 or performing Dcpromo on Dell Servers.
4. Windows Firewall policy may break any remote system management capability due to locked-down network security policy.
5. For security reasons, after a new installation Windows Server 2003 with SP1 integrated, Windows Firewall will be turned on until the Post-Setup Security Update is run. Until the Post-Setup Security Update is complete remote server management is blocked, so to make remote management possible the server will either have to be accessed physically to finish the security update.
6. Windows closes your application due to Data Execution Prevention triggers application compatibility issues.
7. You may have to set DEP settings in the boot.ini /noexecute=policy_level this is detailed in MSKB 875352
8. ISA Server 2000 Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 installation can cause VPN connection failures after a few minutes. Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 Standard Edition Virtual private network (VPN) management does not work correctly. During upgrades through the Service Pack 1 Setup GUI, there is a message stating “Replacement Logon Software” may not be usable when Windows 2003, Service Pack 1 is installed MetaFrame XP, MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0, and MetaFrame Password Manager.
